As Nokia’s touchscreen-enabled line-up was picking up pace with the latest release of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone (read more about it in our exclusive preview here), it was about time hey introduced some new members to their software portfolio. The other day they rolled out S60 5th edition platform that can be installed on touchscreen handsets. As Nokia claims, the new edition of this OS sports a number of unique characteristics and allows the developers to create multimedia-ready devices with a wide array of features enabled in them. Naturally, the first phone to come preinstalled with S60 5th Edition is the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.
The most newsworthy specs of the new OS include:
- Bundled browser supporting Adobe Flash Lite 3
- Finger- and stylus-based navigation
- Bundled motion sensor
- Support for widgets (mini-applications like the ones found in the Samsung M8800)
- Updated video and image editors
- Support for Open C++
